Allied “Kattelhi Foari 2016” was the first of its kind fishing competition held for the islanders of Fuvamulah. The competition was held at an enormous scale aiming to give rise to this very traditional and cultural interest of the islanders that have been followed by many generations. Promethichthys Prometheus locally called as “Kattelhi” is caught after sunset, only in the waters surrounding Fuvahmulah. This rare catch lives below 200 meters and is considered a local delicacy of Fuvamulah.
The objective of holding such a competition was to aware the fishermen, boat owners and islanders regarding the significance of insurance and safety measures of their vessels including themselves.
This one-day event was held on the 20th of February 2016. The competition began in the late afternoon with the departure of the 10 competing teams leaving from the main harbour of Fuvahmulah. Many other exciting events including children games were conducted. Apart from that, a Special hull promotion campaign was also conducted during the event. This promotion was held in association with Hassan Marine Engineering Solutions, the authorized local sales and services distributor for Mercury Marine products.
Prize money of MVR 20,000 was awarded to the champion team who caught the most number of fishes, while MVR 10,000 was awarded to the second and MVR 5000 to the third winner. Besides, Hassan Marine presented a 4 stroke, 30 Horsepower Mercury Outboard Engine to the champion team.
